<p>What can be done about this increasingly worrying contribution to global warming?</p>
<p>The most important options to reduce aircraft CO2 emissions are:</p>
<p>Changes in aircraft and engine technology; use of alternative fuels, such as (sustainably produced) biofuels; regulatory and operational measures such as improvements in air traffic management; economic measures such as inclusion of aircraft emissions in emission trading schemes.</p>
<p>But, as Giovanni Bisignani, manager of International Air Transport Association (IATA), stated: &#8220;Emissions trading schemes only make sense with efficient infrastructure. The IPCC estimates that there is 12% inefficiency in air traffic management globally: we produce up to 73 million tonnes of carbon emissions each year by aircraft flying inefficiently due to air traffic management limitations&#8221;. **</p>
<p>On a personal level we could ask ourselves especially in the developed world: &#8220;Do we really need to fly so frequently?&#8221; The use of telework, teleconference and video conference could be largely increased to plan work and meetings. Can&#8217;t the development of land and air transportation infrastructures be balanced better according to the real needs of people and businesses? Trains could connect cities better and more cheaply for example in Europe, where the prices are not competitive with those of many flights anymore (and night train services have been reduced if not cancelled).</p>
<p>Life styles do matter because if millions of people want to have cheap weekends in relatively close tourist locations, many flights are needed to satisfy their desires and consequently a lot of pollution is generated. Also, our per capita emissions could be cut also by reducing the &#8220;surplus&#8221; trips, by slowing down our life rhythms and enjoying more local attractions in our free time. Who knows? We could discover the &#8220;exotic&#8221; in our own neighborhoods without flying to the Caribbean Sea&#8230;</p>
<p>Furthermore the relationship between the costs and the environmental externalities (i.e. costs not included in the economy like health damages caused by pollution) needs to be considered as well: there are higher marginal impacts for short-distance flights that should be considered in prices paid by passengers.</p>
<p>All these political, technological and personal choices are some of the good examples needed by the developing countries to follow the 21st century&#8217;s Western society along a new sustainable path which looks like the only good alternative forward.</p>

<p>Years ago my dad taught me the benefits of composting food waste. It had nothing to do with any type of &#8220;green&#8221; movement or being environmentally friendly, no, it had everything to do with reintroducing nutrients back into the soil.</p>
<p>Here is what he taught me then and it still holds true today. By burying your food waste and kitchen scraps (no steak bones though), you are providing a quality food source for the creatures that live in your soil. From micro organisms and those creatures that the human eye can not see, up to worms, which of course we do see.</p>
<p>See, what happens is these creatures eat the food (and of course each other) and then finally the worms eat basically everything and their castings (worm poop) create the best nutrients your soil could ever have. By continually supplying your garden soil with food waste you are feeding the earthly creatures and they reward you with healthy soil. Now where can you get a trade off like that!</p>
<p>Ok so here is how you do it. Get yourself a fairly large Tupperware bowl. One large enough to hold at least a week&#8217;s worth of food scraps. Then after each meal dump everything and anything into that bowl. Just do not put steak bones in there, they wont biodegrade or be eaten by the worms. Banana peels, apple peels, coffee grinds, fish, vegetable scraps, egg shells and basically anything you don&#8217;t eat, all qualifies.</p>
<p>When your Tupperware bowl gets full, take it out to your garden and dig a hole about a foot to two feet deep and then dump the food scraps into the hole. Fill in the hole with the dirt and mark the spot with a stick or something else so that you do not dig up that area again for another three months. You need to give those little rascals some time to eat it all.</p>
<p>Now you simply repeat this process as the Tupperware bowl gets full. If you find that you live in colder climates where the ground may freeze for lengthy periods of time, then consider starting a warm box to recycle your food scraps. That goes beyond the scope of this article but I am sure if you Googled the search term &#8220;vermicompost&#8221; you will get all the information you will ever need.</p>
<p>So what are the two things I was talking about earlier? Well obviously the first is you are adding nutrients to your soil through composting food waste. The second is by composting your food waste you are limiting the amount of garbage that ends up in a landfill. The average four person house hold creates about 8 pounds of food waste per week. If every family in America followed this process we would eliminate nearly one billion pounds of food waste garbage a year. Now that is a lot of trash!</p>
<p>Do your part and compost your food waste. The worms in your garden will love you for it and so will everyone else in the environment.</p>

<p>Noise and vibration control is an issue that is much more common than one might originally think. In fact, it can creep up in the most unlikely of places. A good case in point is animal lab environments. Indeed, ALN Magazine recently ran an article titled &#8220;Noise &#038; Vibration Considerations for the Animal Lab Environment.&#8221; Therein, the publication pointed out, &#8220;In the lab animal facility setting, noise, sound, and vibration affect the life cycle, interaction, and behavior of animals.&#8221; However, because &#8220;the impact of noise, sound, and vibration is a largely undocumented factor in the research,&#8221; it&#8217;s an often overlooked issue.</p>
<p>&#8220;If the sound pressure levels get too high,&#8221; the article continues, &#8220;there is a negative impact on animals and structures.&#8221; Vibration control, however, is just as important to these animals as noise control in that it &#8220;is a driving force behind radiated sound.&#8221;</p>
<p>Obviously, exposure to noise and vibration can be detrimental to an animal&#8217;s hearing, but the risks don&#8217;t stop there. &#8220;Sound and vibration can [also] have a physical impact on animals.&#8221; Even more startling, &#8220;Smaller animals are more susceptible to the affects of sound and vibration over time and will adapt or adjust accordingly. In some cases, mutations may result from exposure to undesirable conditions.&#8221;</p>
<p>How can animal laboratories mitigate these problems? The magazine notes, &#8220;The designers can control items that are constant disturbances that may greatly impact the animal community. Items within the designer&#8217;s control include ventilation system design, machinery vibration isolation, wall construction, lighting selection, and computer terminal placement.&#8221;</p>
<p>During the design process, animal labs may want to consult with a producer of custom-molded rubber and rubber-to-metal bonded parts for noise and vibration control. <p>Plasma Gasification Plant (PGP) projects are being developed by at least five gas plasma technology companies, and there are real benefits to be obtained from this technology for the destruction of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW).</p>
<p>There is some debate still whether the process has been demonstrated to be a vaible technology which can be reliably operated by our waste management companies at reasonable cost and in compliance with all emissions regulations. However, the consensus seems to be largely in acceptance now that the technology is largely proven and inherently cleaner than incineration.</p>
<p>Although, gasification is used as a power generating technology, and gas plasma plants do provide a power feed-in to the local power grid, it should be realised by all that the purpose of selecting plasma gasification is currently that of achieving maximum waste mass destruction. The intent of the PGP is primarily to provide an efficent and clean method of dispoing of large quantities of residual MSW. Plasma gasification, although it does produce energy from waste is not primarliy an Energy from Waste (EfW) or Waste to Energy technology. There are other better proven, more efficient, and potentially always also cheaper ways to produce Energy from Waste, such as incineration.</p>
<p>PGPs suffer a high sacrificial load from the use of power at the electrodes to generate the plasma, and energy is also expended before the MSW reaches the plasma zone in the gasifier in chopping up and ensuring that the particle size of the waste is quite small. For this reason they do expend a large proportion of the power generated just in maintaining their own internal power demand.</p>
<p>However, as a waste destruction method producing an inert residue without creating at the same time high levels of toxic gaseous emissions the gas plasma process excels according to reports made to date. It has every reason to be cleaner as well because the reactions which take place in the plasma state take place so quickly and completely that the toxic organic chemicals produced in other combustion processes simply don&#8217;t get a change to be produced.</p>
<p>For a waste management process PGP therefore holds a very good prospect of adoption, as it is a process which is very efficient at diverting waste away from landfill, and thus scores highly among local authority waste disposal engineers who are constantly seeking to comply with regulations to reduce the amount of organic waste sent to landfill.</p>
<p>The PGP process however, also holds another merit and that is that it is being viewed more favourably by the public than incineration, and one main reason for that would be its clean emissions record when compared with incinerators historically.</p>
<p>Throughout Europe the requirement for BMW to be reduced by ever larger percentages necessitates the use of new technology to achieve this high rate of waste diversion, even after high recycling has also been achieved.</p>

<p>Lots of people talk about trying to live a greener life, with some even going so far as to completely change their lifestyle, but most people aren&#8217;t sure how to go green because they don&#8217;t know exactly what that means. Sure, most people know the basics that scratch the surface such as reusing, recycling and reducing the amount of waste output for their homes but there many other steps you can take to move towards a cleaner, greener environment.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re wondering how you can make your life greener, here are five different tips that are simple and easy to implement and that don&#8217;t cost the you anything.  All it takes is a little dedication and after a few months, these five little things will become second-nature to you.</p>
<p>1. The next time you go shopping use cloth bags at the grocery store instead of paper or plastic.  These cloth bags can be purchased for as little as a few dollars each and they&#8217;re much stronger than paper or plastic bags and will last you through years of use. </p>
<p>These bags help reduce waste since most people throw away the plastic and paper bags.  The hardest part of using cloth bags is remembering to take them to the store, but once you get in the habit of using them, it becomes unconscious habit.</p>
<p>2. Replace your standard light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs.  These bulbs use less energy and last for four to five years, almost 15 times longer than traditional bulbs.  While the cost of a compact fluorescent bulb is more than your standard bulb, they easily pay for themselves over time requiring less frequent replacement and reduced energy consumption.  In fact, studies show that a CF bulb can actually pay for itself within one to two months.  One CF bulb also saves about five pounds of greenhouse gas carbon dioxide a month.  Replacing every bulb in your home can have a huge impact on the environment and on your wallet.</p>
<p>3. Use public transportation.  By car pooling, taking the bus, or using the subway you can cut down on the amount of gas you use and the amount of exhaust your car emits.  While it may be an inconvenience in some ways, it is one of the best ways of helping the environment.  Even better, walk or ride your bike to work if possible.  This not only saves you money and helps the environment but it also keeps you fit and healthy!</p>
<p>4. Adjust your thermostat by a few degrees.  By turning your thermostat down by just two degrees in the winter, you can save over 50 pounds of greenhouse gas carbon dioxide per month while lowering your heating bill.  Turning it up a few degrees in the summer can likewise save you money and save the environment. </p>
<p>5. Finally, only wash your clothes or run your dish washer when you have a full load.  It wastes water and electricity to wash and dry only a few pieces of clothing.  In fact, if you can, try to wash your clothes using the cold water cycle as it uses up to 50% less energy than a warm water one. </p>

<h3>Scientists Ask For Higher CO2 Cuts at Copenhagen&#8217;s Spring</h3>

<p>The International Scientific Congress on Climate Change was held in Copenhagen between 10th to 12th March and organised by the International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU): the conclusions will be published into a full synthesis report next June. Almost 1,600 scientific contributions of researchers from over 70 countries have been received, and more than 2,500 delegates attended the event.</p>
<p>Connie Hedegaard, Minister of Climate &#038; Energy of Denmark said that we have &#8220;to avoid the unmanageable and manage the unavoidable&#8221; and she pointed to their example: this European country has become a net energy exporter in 30 years, creating a green growth as a stable solution of the 70s oil crisis. The messages of the congress are various. The risk that current trends of the climatic system will accelerate has a more defined and significant meaning: more probable abrupt and irreversible shifts, and we are already above the worst scenarios published by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 2001. Thus the big problem is trying to at least slow down these trends if not reverse them. The experts tell us that fast regional and global mitigation strategies are needed and that the more we wait the more expensive and ambitious actions will have to be taken in the future. The fact that scientists have come to the point of saying that &#8220;Inaction is Inexcusable&#8221; means also that people who studied relentlessly for decades are frustrated by the inaction of governments, businesses and people: it is understandable given that their work has not been considered and used enough, if not at all, up to now. They are speaking louder and clearer now. The different roles of politicians and scientists have to be combined. It is time for leaders to rely firmly on science as a basis for tough and unavoidable decisions. A &#8220;societal transformation&#8221; is being asked for by a wide group of the most intelligent people on the planet including diffusion of sustainable behaviours, innovative leadership, removal of subsidies and reduction of &#8220;vested interests&#8221;. These are all very explicit messages to politicians and public alike: there is a lot of work to do between now and next December&#8217;s COP15.</p>
<p>In the final debate the Danish Prime Minister, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, summarised the six messages given by scientists as 6 keywords: Urgency (of the climate change challenge), Direction (long term target to be defined), Action (short term targets to be set), Fairness (to the poorest and most vulnerable), Opportunity (to originate large benefits), Governance (creation of a new global multilateral era). He stated firmly that &#8220;Business As Usual is dead&#8221; and asked his colleagues to follow Obama&#8217;s call for a Green New Deal, already asked for by public opinion and by many political parties in the world.</p>
<p>After the final debate with the panel of scientists an impatient Rasmussen asked for clear words on the CO2 emission target to be set in the new treaty. Prof. Daniel Kammen, Obama&#8217;s Senior Policy Advisor, stated that an entire new industrial revolution is needed to cut 1990&#8217;s CO2 emissions by 80% in 2050 and Prof. Stefan Rahmstorf agreed on this point. The feeling was that the other panelists didn&#8217;t mind&#8230; At this point the Prime Minister concluded that the ambition for COP15 can be this -80% long-term objective following the precautionary principle to avoid worse impacts (than the ones presented in 2007 IPCC report) already hypothesized by new works. Overall a more direct communication between scientists and policy makers took place in this huge meeting: now it&#8217;s time for delegations to study and prepare the ground for brave steps forward to be made by the international community in Copenhagen&#8217;s crucial Conference of the Parties #15. Will we be able to navigate better our &#8220;ship&#8221; in the solar system during the over 200 rotations it will make before then?</p>

<h3>Who&#8217;s Greener? Yahoo Vs Google</h3>

<p>Silicon Valley is known for both innovation and hype. Recently, this pool of innovation has extended beyond bandwidth to the protection the environment. Google and Yahoo, the search engine giants, are both headquartered in the Valley and have been making headlines by greening their offices, reducing energy consumption, and carbon trading. The PR motivations are obvious, but are the green benefits really there? To set apart the hype from reality, we have analyzed the green value of both Google and Yahoo&#8217;s headquarter facilities.</p>
<p>We looked at the ecological services provided by green landscape features such as trees and open space (i.e. grass). Grass and trees are pervious surfaces, meaning they allow water to permeate into the ground. Roofs, sidewalks, patios, and asphalt parking lots are examples of impervious surfaces, where rainwater drains into the public storm drains. Heavy metals, oil, and other pollutants are carried off parking lots in rainwater, which often lead directly to open water habitats, where fish, birds, and reptiles live.</p>
<p>In terms of ecological services, trees and grass have been proven to:</p>
<p><strong>1.      </strong><strong>Remove and store carbon from the atmosphere,</strong></p>
<p><strong>2.      </strong><strong>Remove certain airborne pollutants, </strong></p>
<p><strong>3.      </strong><strong>Permits rainwater to seep into the ground as opposed to draining into the stormdrains, and</strong></p>
<p><strong>4.      </strong><strong>Remove certain waterborne pollutants.</strong></p>
<p>Here is a look at how green Google and Yahoo really are and how the measure up against each other.</p>
<p><strong>Google Green Report</strong> <br />
Google&#8217;s headquarters, the Googleplex, covers 44 acres, nearly 50% of which is grass or tree canopy. This is an impressive paved to open space ratio. The grass and trees on the Googleplex remove roughly 2 tons of carbon from the atmosphere per year, or 0.04 tons per year per acre. In addition, 530 lbs. of air pollution are removed per year (e.g., ozone, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and particulate matter), or 12 lbs. per year per acre. It was assumed that the parking lot of the Googleplex is asphalt, and not a type of porous pavement, so the cost of managing rainfall runoff from the Googleplex is $4,474 per year, or $103 per year per acre. The abundance of grass and tree canopy on the Googleplex go a long way to offset the water quality impacts of the paved surfaces (mainly the parking lot). On average, the grass and trees reduce water pollution by 6%, as opposed to the entire property being paved.</p>
<p><strong>Yahoo Green Report</strong> <br />
The Yahoo headquarters, Yahooplex, covers 28 acres, a third of which is grass or tree canopy. This is a classic ratio of paved to open space for large office complexes in California. So far, par for the course. The Yahooplex removes 0.36 tons of carbon from the atmosphere per year, or 0.01 tons per year per acre. 114 lbs. of air pollutants are removed per year, or 4 lbs. per year per acre. In terms of rainfall, the cost associated with runoff is $9,219 per year, or $331 per year per acre. The grass and tree canopy help offset the paved areas with a 2.3% reduction in water pollution as opposed to the entire property being paved.</p>
<p><strong>The final green analysis? </strong></p>
<p>Google kicks Yahoo&#8217;s butt, largely due to the forethought, or luxury, of the Googleplex having 50% of its property surface providing green services. The good news for both Google and Yahoo is that over time, as trees grow, so will the tree&#8217;s canopy and mass, thus storing more carbon and removing more air pollutants.</p>
<p>Green next steps for both Google and Yahoo is to: <br />
 </p>
<ol>
<li><strong>Install porous parking surfaces, allowing up to 80% of rainwater to seep into the ground, </strong></li>
<li><strong>Install green roofs, absorbing rainwater while reducing cooling costs and energy consumption, and</strong></li>
<li><strong>Planting larger trees on the south and west sides of the buildings to reduce cooling costs and energy consumption.</strong></li>
</ol>
<p>While we crunched the hard numbers to settle the Google vs. Yahoo green debate, this report illuminates the great opportunity that awaits these two Silicon Valley giants to harness the ecological services of green surfaces.</p>

<p>Petroleum, our main source of oil-based wood finishes and paint, is a non-renewable resource.  There are now paints and finishes on the market that are derived from a renewable resource, which  in a small way, helps to reduce dependence on oil, and  contributes to a more sustainable world.</p>
<p>The basis for these products is whey, which is a product of cheese making, and which has a high biochemical oxygen demand (BOD).  This increases the burden on waste treatment facilities, and can also pollute our natural water sources.  In the last ten years, this by-product has been used for many new purposes, one of which is natural wood finishes.</p>
<p>When choosing paints for your decorating, use the low or no VOC (volatile organic compound) paints. For hundreds, no, thousands of years, earth, clay and lime have been used, both in hot and cold areas of the world.  And now this knowledge is being readapted for contemporary use. If you do any redecorating or new building, it makes sense to contribute to having green, healthy surroundings.</p>
<p>Low and no VOC paints have less smell and less impact on air quality.  EPA studies have shown that indoor air quality is up to five times more toxic than outdoors, mainly because of toxic emissions from paint and finishes. This particularly affects anyone with allergies, asthma, or chemical sensitivities. With the new &#8220;green&#8221; paints, there will be lower contamination of landfills, groundwater, and the ozone.</p>
<p>Switching will not cost you more.  Cleanup is easily done with soap and water, instead of toxic chemicals, and brushes can easily be cleaned and reused.  The paint is still washable, and is far less harmful to you, your pets, and the environment.</p>

<h3>The 3 R&#8217;s &#8211; Our Family&#8217;s Commitment to Do More</h3>

<p>So How You Do&#8217;ing? In the spirit of recycling, I thought I would use those famous words from Friends character Joey. I have shared with you in other articles ideas that my family are using to cut our carbon footprint on this precious Earth that we call home.</p>
<p>Reducing is always a challenge, because it goes in the face of our societal values of having more and doing more, but it is the highest form of recycling.</p>
<p>Re-using is something that has been natural for me through out my life. It may be challenging at times to creatively transform old household items into new uses, but this has become one of the staples of our family&#8217;s efforts to be more environmentally friendly&#8230;and save money.</p>
<p>Recycling has become the catch phrase for the 3 R&#8217;s, but is strictly speaking altering one thing into another. It is important that we recycle as much as we possibly can, because making consumables from recycled goods is always cheaper and better for the environment than making them from raw materials. But we should recognise too that recycling should only be used after we have reduced and re-used. For our children and their futures, we must use all the arsenal of tools embodied in the 3 R&#8217;s: reducing wherever we can, re-using everything that we possibly can, and recycling every item that our councils and recycling centres will accept.</p>
<p>Today I am wanted to look at those things that my family could do better:</p>
<p>1) Reducing excess packaging. I think this might be the most challenging to tackle; partly because a great deal of it is beyond our control. We are, I admit, large consumers of electronics (blame techie husband). Have you ever noticed how much packaging goes into one tiny piece of plastic? A memory stick that is one inch by two will most often come in a plastic (non-recyclable) package with a large cardboard inset and an information packet. I recognise that this is an anti-theft device, but aren&#8217;t there other alternatives? What about putting such items behind the counter? The other side of that is that the packaging contributes to the cost of that piece of plastic and metal. Of course, this is an issue that will require a concreted effort from consumer and most likely government intervention to address. What I can do for now is to choose to purchase my fruit and vegetables loose. I am also hoping this will cut down on both spending and waste by purchasing only what we need.</p>
<p>2) I am going to remember to use those little switches on the power plugs. As I mentioned, being American we do not have such things. It has been hard for me change a lifetime of habits. But with my husband&#8217;s help, I am going to use these magic little buttons more often.</p>
<p>3) We are going to replace all batteries with rechargeable ones. About half of our batteries are rechargeable; mostly the ones in our keyboards and mousse. But over the coming weeks, we will replace all batteries with rechargeable ones&#8230;since these are particularly toxic waste in our landfills.</p>
<p>4) I am going to use less water when washing dishes. I have this habit of running the water to rinse dishes as I go. The new plan is to wash everything and sit it on the counter until I am done. Then use the same pan to rinse the dishes in cold water.</p>
<p>5) I am going to have a spring clean out. I may be doing pretty well at re-using but I could help others to do better by donating all the stuff I am not using to Freecycle, the Islington Swap Xchange, or my local Mind shop. This will make my husband very happy as he has been complaining about my daughter&#8217;s toys for a while now.</p>
<p>So what can you do better? Remember though this is not about being perfect, but the little things that we can realistically do and continue to do. The things that may seem so small that you don&#8217;t think they will make a difference: things that if we all did would make a huge difference. I invite you all to share your list with me.</p>
